{"id":97660,"count":7,"description":"Reporting by Alexis Angelus from her home in Winnetka, Illinois. \r\n\r\nWinnetka is located in Cook County, which was established in 1831 with just 100 residents in its 950 square miles. Six years later, the county chartered the city of Chicago, known then for its port on Lake Michigan port and Fort Dearborn. \r\n\r\nTwo-hundred years later, Cook County is now home to over five million residents and the third biggest city in the United States. The county has evolved from a land scarred by disputes between Native Americans and white settlers to the urban core of the Midwest. The county's advantageous location along Lake Michigan brought opportunity, new industries, and a diverse set of neighborhoods. However, like most American cities, race governs the county, shapes Chicago politics, and creates socioeconomic barriers. Bolstered by the booming economy of the city, Chicago residents moved to the North, South, and West, developing city suburbs that now make up over half of the county's residents. Wealthy white suburbs in the North and West loom over Chicago's South and West sides, home to lower socioeconomic and more diverse residents. \r\n\r\nCOVID-19 underscores the inequality present in Cook County. Media outlets have reported black Chicagoans have fallen victim to COVID-19 at a higher rate than white Cook County residents due to their higher likelihood of working in service positions pre-existing health inequities. However far the county has come, it still has farther to go.\u00a0","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/category\/winnetka-il\/","name":"Winnetka, IL","slug":"winnetka-il","taxonomy":"category","parent":0,"meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories\/97660","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/taxonomies\/category"}],"wp:post_type":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/walkingrichmond\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts?categories=97660"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
