Style Guide

University Communications maintains a style guide for common University-related content and common errors.

Here are a few additional style guides for SPCS-specific uses.

SPCS, School, and School of Professional and Continuing Studies

Except when writing for the dean, avoid using the article “the” before SPCS, as in “the SPCS.”

Correct format: “We are proud of SPCS and its accomplishments.”

When referring specifically to SPCS, capitalizing “School” is preferred. In general, online communications capitalizes uses of School when referring specifically to SPCS.

Correct usage: “The School maintains the high standards of the University of Richmond.”

When referring to SPCS among schools, lowercase is preferred.

Correct usage: “SPCS is one of five schools of the University of Richmond.”

After naming the School with its full name once in a document or project, you may use SPCS, the School, or Professional and Continuing Studies as alternates. Never use only SPCS in a document — always be sure to specify the full name in the first use.

Graduation Years

Richmond alumni are identified in official publications with a letter and graduation year combination. For SPCS undergraduates, the letter is “C”; for SPCS graduate-level graduates, the letters are “GC”; the year is two-digit, with an apostrophe separating the two (and facing the letter). Any academic certificate or degree is considered an SPCS degree.

Undergraduate (including undergraduate certificates and associate degrees): Anna Sample, C‘09

Graduate (including graduate certificates and master’s degrees): Edward Examplar, GC‘13

Any graduate of University College, SCS, or SPCS is labeled with C or GC. “UC” for University College is not standard usage.
