Built during World War I, when the University temporarily moved downtown so that the campus could function as a military hospital, the Red Cross Building stood near the current site of Booker Hall. It was intended as a recreational facility for recovering soldiers, so when the students returned in 1920, it served as the Westhampton College gymnasium until the Women’s Building (later renamed Keller Hall) was constructed in 1935. The Red Cross Building was also the home of the Department of Music from 1920-1935, although many performances still took place in the Blue Room of Westhampton College (today’s North Court).
