In 1918 a contest was held for an alma mater song for Westhampton College. According to A Gem of a College by Claire Millhiser Rosenbaum,
The winner of the contest, Elizabeth Walker Ellyson Wiley, WC ’18, recalled later that her inspiration came from observing the beauty of the campus, especially the pine grove, and the trees at sunset. The lyrics were originally set to a German tune, “Watch on the Rhine.” However, in 1918 there was considerable anti-German sentiment and it was thought that non-German music would be more appropriate. Accordingly, Dr. [F] Flaxington Harker, head of the Westhampton College music department, composed the music which is still sung today.
