{"id":335,"date":"2013-02-27T15:33:42","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T19:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/?p=335"},"modified":"2013-03-25T13:31:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T17:31:58","slug":"3d-printing-filament-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/2013\/02\/27\/3d-printing-filament-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Printing Filament Tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Update: See updated design and photo of the prototype that can automatically feed at the end of this post (I have not yet tested heating).<\/p>\n<p>As much excitement as there is around the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the3doodler.com\/\">3Doodler kickstarter project<\/a>, it turns out that there is some prior art vis-\u00e0-vis a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:4156\">thingiverse project<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/donutman_2000\/designs\">donutman_2000<\/a> . \u00a0To that end, I figure we might as well get into the mix. \u00a0I will be taking some left over parts from past 3D printer projects and putting together a 3D printing pen\/gun similar to donutman_2000&#8217;s design. \u00a0Here is the basic idea as mocked up in SketchUp:<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/2013\/02\/27\/3d-printing-filament-tool\/screen-shot-2013-02-28-at-8-07-03-pm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-345\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-345\" title=\"3D Printing Tool Design\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/files\/2013\/02\/Screen-Shot-2013-02-28-at-8.07.03-PM-300x211.png\" alt=\"SketchUp schematic of 3D printing gun (like a hot glue gun) with hotend, mounting, idler bearing, motor, spindle gear, on\/off button, etc.\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/files\/2013\/02\/Screen-Shot-2013-02-28-at-8.07.03-PM-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/ti3d\/files\/2013\/02\/Screen-Shot-2013-02-28-at-8.07.03-PM.png 956w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starting at the bottom, there is a blue motor housing to surround a 10 rpm motor (I estimated that the slowest we would want the motor to turn is 5 rpm and the fastest would be about 30 rpm. \u00a0This is based on the relative geometries of the feed plastic and extrusion nozzle and gear ratios). \u00a0There is a momentary switch (red) that would be used like a trigger to extrude the plastic. \u00a0Above the motor is a toothed spindle (yellow) that we purchased from qu-bd.com for our Thing-O-Matic printer.
