Questions about Story History/Plan

I had the same question as Kristen that she posted a couple of days ago.
If you heard the story from someone and that is your major source of knowledge of the story, how do you describe its origin? Should we do additional research?
How formal is this supposed to be? I’ve been taking a relaxed approach to researching/planning my story so that it is more authentic when I tell it to the class. Should it be more formal and structured than I am making it out to be?

Re: source of story: are you asking about this for your bibliography? Your story telling plan? The idea was to first do some research on your story, and then use that to tell us about your story and to decide how you tell the story. So– what did you find out about your story? What do you want to tell us about it?
Re: telling: you are right about it being “informal” and not “memorized.” But you will have to think a lot about it, think about what it means, and how to engage us. That is the plan part! Is that what you are wondering?
