Storytelling’s Heart & Soul

“What was and is crucial for this storyteller (and all storytellers) is shaping a tale so that it becomes alive, effective, and relevant. Indeed, he sought and seeks to make himself relevant.”

This quote is the heart and soul of storytelling. When we have a story to tell, our first thought is who can I tell this to? Who would appreciate the story that I am about to tell? You wouldn’t tell your dad about how a boy has been flirting with you and today he finally made a move. Audience is key when telling a story but finding a way to engage that audience is to make the story come alive in a way they’ll understand. Besides making other people feel connected while storytelling, the storyteller himself feels “relevant” because he is saying something of value that others can relate to. Ultimately, a storyteller has an important job when tasked with telling a story. They must tell it in a compelling way that makes the listeners feels relevant and connected.
