Second Trip to Bon Air
This trip felt much shorter than the last one, partly because it took security a long time to get the boys into the room, and even then, we were missing about 2 boys. My partner, Brian, later told me that one of the boys was in isolation, or “lock” as he called it, for throwing chairs because he was mad one day. I learned a lot of interesting things, despite the session being cut short. I also had minimal energy today so I wasn’t too upset that it was cut short because I felt like I wasn’t capable of giving my full energy to talking with Brian. He did, however, tell me more about what life was like in Bon Air. He said that classes are coed, so he gets to meet some girls. But, they fight each other all the time. Brian said sometimes he wants to get into fights because he gets really caught up in the moment, but then he remembers that fighting could put him in lock, add two years to his sentence, or just ruin his good behavior at Bon Air. And, he said that most of the time, the two people who start fighting will shake hands later on anyways. It was really interesting to me because people will get into violent fights over nothing and end up making up an hour later. It is a much different mentality than I am used to. Other than that, it felt almost too short of a session to do much more than have one or two conversations.
