Bon Air Week 1
On the way to Bon Air, I was extremely nervous about the upcoming meeting, because I am not good at talking to strangers even in my first language. However, the guards’ kindness more or less smoothed my nerviness. They were so different form my imagination and the screening process was much easier than I thought. When I arrived in the library, I was nervous again because I only saw three boys which meant that I had no partner. I remembered one detail that When we first introduced our class, Jordan was just playing with his figures, striking on the table. I knew that little movement was a signal of anxiety. Moreover, I noticed that the way Jordan talked and his tone were a little different from other Americans I met in school. To be honest, the burst of laugh after I introduced myself really embarrassed me. Jordan and Trenton just can’t stop giggling. I know there is a psychological conduct that people are intended to exaggerate their behaviors in order to attract attentions. I think Jordan and Trenton’s behaviors were really typical. I really appreciated that Eric said many times to Jordan to stop doing that and that was really rude and impolite. I didn’t participate in the first one-to-one conversation, but I noticed that other three group proceeded really well. Fortunately, I joined the second group talk. Eric just said sorry again to me about their giggling. I was really impressed by his politeness and maturity. During our conversations, Eric just started most topics and when we talked he just directly looked me in the eyes. It gave me a feeling of respectful. Eric just seemed very curious about the college life. He asked me a lot about how to apply to colleges and the most interesting part of colleges. It just showed that he is curious positive about the future. The first time I saw a true happy smile in his face was when we talk about the NBA players. He told me that he really liked football and basketball and he hoped he can continue to play basketball after he gets out. What most surprised me is that he is a poet. He told me that when he is free, he always writes poems and reads a lot. He has read almost every book in that library. I just felt really happy for him that he had a mentor to support him to write poem. I just hope I can take advantages of the two weeks interval and prepare much better next time.
