Connection to Storytelling and Identity

This weekend, I ran across a buzzed article by Mike Spohr that connected to Storytelling and Identity, and I wanted to share it with everyone. Last week Anna Dwdney, a children’s book author, passed away from brain cancer. According to Buzzfeed, her final request was that, “… in lieu of a funeral service- people read to a child instead” (Spohr). After reading the article about the stories our parents tell us, this request really spoke to me. I have a lot of fond memories of reading stories with my mom when I was little, so I was really touched by all the pictures that were included in the article of parents reading to their children. I’m glad you posted this, Sarah! I saw an article on her final wish as well. It made me think of a class I am working with, an SSIR called “Reading to Live.” In that class, students work in literacy programs around Richmond, and begin to see how hard it can be to help someone learn to read who doesn’t love reading. One thing they discover usually is that there aren’t any books in the homes of poor children, and no one reading with them, for a variety of reasons (like their moms, often single, work 3 minimum wage jobs and are often gone or exhausted!)I developed a love of reading early, partly thanks to a Bookmobile in my neighborhood! And I absolutely loved reading with my kids. Reading to kids and giving them books is truly one of the greatest gifts you can give.
