Reflection on Persepolis
At first, I wasn’t so sure about Persepolis and its comic book-like nature, but I LOVED it! It is very sneaky, because I felt like I was just reading comic strips, but I was also learning much more about Iran’s history than I ever knew as well as gaining a lot of perspective on the Iran/Iraq war. The book helped show that the majority of Iranians are nowhere near extremists. In addition, being told from a child’s point of view emphasized that all children are the same. They just want to have fun, play, and look cool in their Nikes and jean jackets. Because Iranians are no different than us, it makes me wonder how the regime rose so quickly to such power. It seems as though most of the population disagreed with what they stood for, so I’m curious as to what might have happened if more people would have spoken out against it. In a way, it reminded me of Nazi Germany. Unfortunately, many don’t realize the severity of the situation until it is too late. Also, I feel like the story ended rather abruptly. I really want to know what happened to her and if she ever got to see her parents again!
