Reflection on Persepolis

After reading this graphic novel, I was impressed by how incisive a kid’s viewpoint could be.  When the author was young, she realized that one of the biggest problems of her society is the huge gap between the difference social classes. Her maid was dumped as soon as her boyfriend found out that she was from another class. It’s extremely unfair. I remembered that the author says “it’s not her fault that she was born where she was born.”  Being born in a lower social class does’t mean that her density is predetermined. Being born in a lower social class does’t mean that she has no chance to change her life. Being born in a lower social class does’t mean that her future is bond to be bleak.

Moreover, I was really touched by the author’s grandmother’s words: “In life, you will meet a lot of jerks. If they hurt you, tell yourself that it’s because they’re stupid. That will help keep you from reaction to their cruelty. Because there is nothing worse  than bitterness and vengeance… Always keep your dignity and be true to yourself.”  Sometimes it’s about forgiveness, but more often it’s about remembering that you have much more important and meaningful things to do rather than wasting time on those jerks.  I hope we can talk more about this in class!
