Throughout the site, I consider each songs\u2019 hollow sonic musical space and sexualized campy visuals to criticize cultural norms of heterosexuality and traditional perceptions of gender in each artists\u2019 respective decade. Additionally, \u201cI Want To Break Free\u201d and \u201cPYNK\u201d use a homogeneous representation of gender to normalize non-heterosexual images and create a visual space of community and acceptance. While \u201cI Want To Break Free\u201d was released in 1984, and \u201cPYNK\u201d was released in 2018, the messages of acceptance and freedom from these norms of heterosexuality and gender are timeless and continue to be relevant today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This site looks at \u201cI Want To Break Free&#8221; by Queen and \u201cPYNK\u201d by Janelle Mon\u00e1e.
