{"id":11,"date":"2020-03-20T17:28:37","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T21:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/template-projectsite\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2020-05-05T00:51:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T04:51:12","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/spring2020-mus235-02\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn, JAY-Z, and how &#8220;Where I&#8217;m From&#8221; influenced Kendrick Lamar and Hip-Hop discourse in the inner city."},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/spring2020-mus235-02\/files\/2020\/04\/hov.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997 JAY-Z\u2019 \u2018Where I\u2019m From\u2019 video, shot outside of his home in the Marcy Projects of Brooklyn, NY, focused on the tough nature of living in project housing in the 90\u2019s. Eighteen years later in 2015 Kendrick Lamar released the video \u201cKing Kunta\u201d which details his life in Compton after he began to have commercial success. These videos are very similar in the way they both portray the difficulties of what life is like growing up in their cities. Both videos contain imagery of their city along with members of the community. They also both contain lyrics about being the best rapper and they use flow changes in their delivery to change up the mood of the song. JAY-Z\u2019 video \u2018Where I\u2019m From\u2019 inspired Kendrick Lamar and other artists to discuss where they came from in their music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/spring2020-mus235-02\/files\/2020\/05\/Kunta.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the harshness of his living situation JAY-Z reiterates a certain pride he has in his roots while also calling attention to what is wrong with the neighborhood. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Media will be inserted regarding this)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This narrative and execution of this music video would eventually help inspire other artists such as Kendrick Lamar to discuss the toughness of their upbringings, while also paying homage to their cities such as Compton, CA\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Media will be inserted regarding this)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Throughout the rest of this research process I am looking to find out the effect that these artists had on their respective communities, politically, socially, and musically by way of discussing the hardships that they lived through, while at the same time honoring the cities they group up in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Media will be inserted regarding this)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendrick Lamar, who grew up in Compton, CA, was also inspired by JAY-Z\u2019 \u2018Where I\u2019m From\u2019 video, in that he very frequently discusses his upbringing in the city. In one of my sources, titled \u201cThe Trials of Kendrick Lamar,\u201d published in Rolling Stone magazine, it discusses how Kendrick grew up during the time of the LA Riots, and how his father often looted items from stores. In the song \u201cCompton\u201d off of Kendrick Lamar\u2019s album \u2018good kid, m.A.A.d city,\u2019 he talks about the rampant drug use and crime in the city.
