7: Their Impact

Despite the lack of radio play, “Fight the Power” also had an impact on the protest scene. Black students chanted the lyrics at police during a riot in Virginia Beach in 1989 and in 1991, all the way in Serbia, the song became an anti-Milošević anthem broadcasted repeatedly on the news.

Unlike Public Enemy, Kendrick Lamar did not create “Alright” to be a protest song, but the public found something in the music and the lyrics that inspired them to use it in multiple political demonstrations. There were protests by the Black Lives Matter Movement and other social change organizations where the crowd chanted the chorus to the song.

Both songs were able to inspire people to come together and get their voices heard.
