With all this going on Lynyrd Skynyrd never lostLynyrd Skynyrd expressed a lot through their music with everything happening in the heart of the south involving politics with the band narrowing it down to Governor George Wallace being their main focus, racial tensions post civil rights, and the transformation of music that began at that time. With all this going on Lynyrd Skynyrd never lost sight of staying true to the strong culture of Southern rock n roll that they believed in so deeply. Southern rock was considered a regressive music meaning it was rowdy, had progressive vision of the south’s future showing how the south was ready to move on and forget about what happened in the 1960s. If you were to ask someone who was a southern rock band, 9/10 people would say Lynyrd Skynyrd right away. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the most well known and popular Southern Rock band. That is important because you don’t go to the top of the charts at this time period in music being an ordinary band. I believe Their passion for southern rock culture is what made them successful and caused people to love them outside their music, by just being who they really were no matter where they were or what they were doing. For an example Stephen Thomas Elewine wrote an article for Rolling stone magazine stating “performing in front of a confederate flag and alluding to George Wallace”. Lynyrd Skynyrd performed with that confederate flag alone on stage till 2012 and used it on Their T-shirts, hats, and belt buckles. After 2012 Lynyrd Skynyrd began to perform still with the Confederate flag but the flag did not fly alone on stage. The group put up an American flag alongside the confederate flag. In the Rolling stone Magazine written by Stephen Elewine it states the Lynyrd Skynyrd states “at the end of the day we are all American”. This is a great example of how Lynyrd Skynyrd was and the influence that Southern Rock had on them. In the south American Pride has always stuck out to me as a serious matter to them. Like Lynryrd Skynryrd putting the confederate flag on all the bands apparel, in the south you see the American flag portrayed on almost everything such as shirts, shorts, stickers for cars, boots, and you even see people have the American flag tattooed on their body knowing it will never go away. When Lynyrd decided to put the American flag on stage they began to connect with the fans in the audience even more. Fans saw that and felt that if Lynyrd Skynyrd who is one of the most famous bands ever still believes and has pride in America then so could they and everything was gonna be alright. They also did not care what other people thought while doing that while performing their attitude, we are gonna do this and this is what we believe and if you do not like it we don’t care. With them being like that it caused them to become the real first originator in a genre that created dozens of other bands such as Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Baniels Band, Black Foot, Molly Hatchet, and the Allman Brothers. All these bands fed off Lynyrd Skynyrd and also expressed their beliefs on gun control, racial issues, political beliefs and lived the rowdy rock n roll rebel lifestyle.
With the new wave of music trying to force its way in at the time Lynyrd Skynyrd never got off track of what kinda music they loved writing and performing. It was not only Lynyrd Skynyrd that did this though, bands such as the Allman brothers and The Marshall Tucker Band stuck to the rock n roll and country sound. These bands made it a point to carry a tradition forward instead of transitioning to the new wave. What Lynyrd Skynyrd continued to produce was shown through one of their most popular songs being “ Simple Man”. The song “ Simple Man” starts off in the beginning playing an electric guitar to make it sound like an acoustic guitar which was very popular in country music at that time. The riff presented in the song lasts almost from start to finish with some texture added with the symbol. As the song goes on the steel string guitar makes its appearance as the song starts to pick up. The steel string guitar was also presented mostly in country and rock n roll songs. Other key instruments that are presented in this song are the bass and the procussion that are brought in when the song gets to its peak. The way the singer presents his voice in the song is another very important piece. In certain parts of the song he actually talks and does not sing. When he talks you can hear the country draw in his voice which presents that country and southern rock. When he is talking you can hear some words that he says that you would not hear from people up north. The one that sticks out to me the most is when he says “mama”. Different People call their moms different things, but you very rarely hear someone call their mom “mama” unless you go down south. That is unique because how you talk depends on how and where you were raised which some people take a lot of pride in which in this case Lynyrd Skynyrd is very proud to say they were raised in the south. In expressing all these different characteristics in not only “Simple man” but in a lot of their other songs which made them popular was they present country and rock n roll together drawing two different crowards of music listeners to create that southern rock culture with them being considered the leader.
