Overview

Disco as a musical genre emerged in the 1970s. Although the genre was initially obscure, the film “Saturday Night Fever” popularized it by bringing it into the mainstream. However, by the late ’70s disco began to decline in popularity as a response to societal reactionary movements. Chic was a disco group that was founded towards the end of disco’s popularity. Despite this, Chic became very popular although their popularity was hurt by the Disco Demolition Night of 1979. Chic was different than many other disco groups and that may have saved them. Although it may seem that disco died after the demolition, it’s legacy will live on for decades to come. Chic and their influences can be heard throughout the music industry across many different genres.
