The construction of the iconic album cover was an important aspect to the band’s success. It started when the famous English graphic designers Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson met with the band to see what their cover art ideas were. Powell and Storm left the meeting unsatisfied with what they came up with and began to do their work. Throughout the research process, Storm was reading a physics book and noticed a picture of a paperweight with sunlight beaming through it creating a rainbow on the other side. Storm said:“I’ve got it: a prism. It’s all about Pink Floyd and their light show.” (Grow) In Pink Floyd’s early years, they were known for their music but they were also widely known for their vast light shows where the audience did not pay attention to the band during their performances. The band stayed out of the spotlight and let the music and light show do the talking.
The idea of a triangle seemed simple but Powell and Storm said that Pink Floyd loved it. After the second meeting with the band, the two designers needed some more research on triangles so they took a trip to Giza, Egypt. From looking at the album cover, a trip to the Egyptian Pyramids seems excessive. Considering how famous The Dark Side of the Moon became, this makes more sense. Pink Floyd never attached a meaning to the cover art because they want the listeners to create a meaning for themselves while listening to their music. Even though the song “Money” does not have any visual connection to the cover, whenever people think of the song, they think of the album, then they think of the iconic cover art. Once Powell and Thorgerson were done with the Pink Floyd cover, they became well known in the industry and worked with Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath.
