Pink Floyd’s promotional video for their song “Money” helps uncover the era, environment, and themes that are discussed through their lyrics. While only a promotional video and most likely not largely/widely consumed as MTV was not in existence, it still provides relevant images and meaning. The “Progressive Rock” movement/genre really comes to light in how Pink Floyd performs through instrumentation and lyrics. The message conveyed through instrumentation and lyrics can be interpreted in the images displayed in their music promotional video.
The music promotional video serves as a critique western culture which is filled with materialism and spending habits. The video portrays all of the things that money can get you: luxury cars, drugs, clothes, and jewelry took up the beginning of the video. Towards the middle of the video it shows the struggle of the working people that can barely get by. Throughout the entire video, there is a coin spinning and an eye between each clip of the desires of money. The eye staring at the spinning coin shows how no one can take their eye off money, it’s all people care about. Outside of the vivid imagery employed by the band, the viewer can hear interesting elements as well. The sound of coins clashing against each other as well as the sound of a cash register “Kaching-ing.” The sounds support the imagery as the world is fueled by materialism and the song can almost be seen as a critique of this culture.
