{"id":54,"date":"2008-09-18T20:23:02","date_gmt":"2008-09-19T00:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/script_analysis\/2008\/09\/18\/medea-plot-buildup-to-the-inciting-incident\/"},"modified":"2008-09-18T20:39:22","modified_gmt":"2008-09-19T00:39:22","slug":"medea-plot-buildup-to-the-inciting-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/script_analysis\/2008\/09\/18\/medea-plot-buildup-to-the-inciting-incident\/","title":{"rendered":"Medea Plot: Buildup to the Inciting Incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The stasis of Medea&#8217;s world before Euripides&#8217; play is indeed precarious.\u00a0 Having fallen in love with Jason, Medea helps him to win the Golden Fleece against her father&#8217;s wishes, then kills her brother.\u00a0 She leaves Colchis and, in turn, loses everything she has ever known.\u00a0 Jason and Medea sail to Corinth, where she is essentially looked upon as a lower-class barbarian.\u00a0 This is compounded with her nature as an argumentative, vengeful woman with knowledge of magic. \u00a0 Living in an alien land where she is seen as a savage witch, her husband is her greatest support.\u00a0 In Medea&#8217;s time and place, that is a dangerous position for a woman indeed.<\/p>\n<p>The inciting incident which tips all of these factors out of balance is Creon&#8217;s offering of Glauce to Jason.\u00a0 At first glance, it seems that it could be Jason&#8217;s actual announcement that he is leaving Medea.\u00a0 However, it is obvious that Jason highly prizes his\u00a0social and political position.  There is no way that he would refuse Creon&#8217;s offer of a young, beautiful bride who can bring him prestige.  On the other hand, Jason is very aware of Medea&#8217;s nature and her magical abilities.  He knows that she will react violently.
