Better Memory
-We know what we did yesterday
-We know what day of the week it is
-We would know if we went to the same place two days in a row
-We don’t talk about hanging ourselves in a careless manner
-We don’t find people treated like a horse (Pozzo and Lucky) or have slaves.
-We don’t sell people at fairs (unlike Pozzo and Lucky)
-We would notice (unlike Estragon) if someone was being treated cruelly. Estragon prefers to chew his bones.
-We tend to speak with sentences that are more descriptive, pertinent, and meaningful.
-We don’t listen to people think for entertainment (I don’t at least…)
Sorry Glenn, I repeated your suicide one without noticing…and I’m confused about the whole watching someone think for entertainment thing. How does that even work? Is the person thinking out loud, or just to themself? Or do the characters in this play READ MINDS?!?
Okay, now I’m just being silly.
Weeeeellllll…. I’m pretty sure they don’t read minds. What I was getting at, was when Pozzo tries to entertain Estragon and Vladimir, he names off the various abilities Lucky has to entertain, one of them being to think. Here’s the section.
POZZO:
Is is enough? No doubt. But I am liberal. It’s my nature. This evening. So much
the worse for me. (He jerks the rope. Lucky looks at him.) For I shall suffer, no
doubt about that. (He picks up the whip.) What do you prefer? Shall we have him
dance, or sing, or recite, or think, or€”
ESTRAGON:
Who?
POZZO:
Who! You know how to think, you two?
VLADIMIR:
He thinks?
POZZO:
Certainly. Aloud. He even used to think very prettily once, I could listen to him
for hours. Now . . . (he shudders). So much the worse for me. Well, would you
like him to think something for us?
Here’s my thing with: We don't listen to people think for entertainment (I don't at least€¦)
I think that we listen to people think for entertainment, but when our people think they preach their thoughts. A good example of this would be the Media. What more are most news stories than just the thinking of experts and pundits expressed through huge graphics and overly-dramatic music. Perhaps Vlady and Estragy can’t compare with Anderson Cooper 360‘s ratings.
Also though, I’m not sure that we don’t speak in non-descriptive sentances like our guys do. I’ve overheard (of course not spoken) a number of conversations which are remarkably simpler than this dialogue.
