Our students and alumni have had great success presenting their research at conferences all over the US and even internationally. Below are some of our recent research projects:<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/sal-sandbox\/east-end-cemetery-project\/\">East End Cemetery Project<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The\u00a0<span class=\"markzspb4u7wq\" data-markjs=\"true\">East<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"markloa6r70fu\" data-markjs=\"true\">End<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"markucpjs9dr2\" data-markjs=\"true\">Cemetery<\/span>\u00a0Collaboratory\u00a0has brought together\u00a0spatial mapping efforts initiated by UR Biology and the Spatial Analysis Lab with historical and\u00a0sociological efforts in over nine classes at UR and VCU. The goal of the Collaboratory is to enrich community-based learning experiences for students\u00a0while contributing to a shared mission\u00a0to reclaim and restore the\u00a0<span class=\"markucpjs9dr2\" data-markjs=\"true\">cemetery<\/span>\u00a0grounds, to\u00a0curate and document this\u00a0outdoor archive of African American history and culture in\u00a0Richmond, and to produce place-based knowledge that contributes to a community\u00a0dialogue about our collective past. One of the initial efforts by the Collaboratory was the large-scale collection\u00a0of GPS coordinates as part of student engagement with the\u00a0<span class=\"markucpjs9dr2\" data-markjs=\"true\">cemetery<\/span>. We have been\u00a0successful in collecting and georeferencing over\u00a02,700 coordinates\u00a0to date.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/sal-sandbox\/unpackingthecensus\/\">Unpacking the Census Project<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Dr. John V. Moeser, former senior fellow of the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, worked with students in the University\u2019s\u00a0Spatial Analysis Lab\u00a0to visualize the complex numbers and figures of our region. The result: Unpacking the Census, a presentation about poverty, race, and immigration in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Goochland, Powhatan, Charles City, New Kent, and Hanover that has been presented by Moeser and other facilitators across Richmond.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/sal-sandbox\/kenya\/\">Smallholder Settlement Schemes of Kenya Project<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Numerous University of Richmond employees, students, interns, and volunteers, in coordination with the Kenyan National Land Commission (NLC) and the London School of Economics, are working to create a geospatial dataset of Kenyan Smallholder Settlement Scheme boundaries for research.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/sal-sandbox\/rock-pools\/\">James River Rock Pools Project<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Starting in May 2017, we have been conducting teaching modules at the Belle Isle rock pools in downtown Richmond every semester as part of Introductory Biology (BIOL 202) and Geography (GEOG 250) classes.\u00a0This work is conducted in\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with\u00a0James Vonesh, a community ecologist at VCU, and includes several graduate student research projects.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/sal-sandbox\/urban-heat-island\/\">Urban Heat Island Project<\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">In addition to cities being warmer overall than rural areas, cities themselves do not heat evenly.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">During the summer of 2017, we undertook a unique project to quantify the strength of Richmond\u2019s &#8220;urban heat island&#8221; effect during one of the City\u2019s heat wave events. In order to measure the spatial pattern of Richmond\u2019s urban heat island effect, we used electronic temperature sensors and GPS units attached to cars and bikes to track temperature at specific geographic locations at one-second intervals during one of the hottest days of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">These data were used to build a high-resolution model of the spatial variability of temperature for the City.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research Posters Independent and collaborative student research is one of the cornerstones of the Spatial Analysis Lab\u2019s approach to teaching GIS and spatial analysis.
