One person dons wreaths,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and another passes along sweet-smelling perfume in a saucer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mixing-bowl stands full of cheer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wine is at the ready, which promises never to run out;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is mild in its jars and fragrant like a flowery bouquet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the middle of it all, frankincense sets forth a sacred scent,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and there is frigid, sweet, pure water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9 \u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden loaves lie close by, and a divine table<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is laden with cheese and thick honey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the center, an altar is fully covered with flowers,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>12 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the room is surrounded with dance and good cheer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>13 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But first, cheerful men must sing hymns to divinities<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>14 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with reverent tales and pure speech,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>15 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having poured libations, praying to be able to do\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>16 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is right \u2013 for this is a more obvious thing to do, not deeds of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>17 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not right to drink so much that you require a servant to lead you home,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>18 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unless you are very old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>19 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Praise the man who reveals noble deeds while drinking<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>20 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that result in a recollection of and stretching towards virtue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>21 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn\u2019t marshal battles of Titans, nor giants,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>22 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nor centaurs, nor any fictions of old,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>23 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nor violent conflicts \u2013 in these, there is nothing useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>24 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it is always good to hold the gods in high regard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Xenophanes 18<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One should say such things in the season of winter, beside a fire,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reclining gently, with a full stomach,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drinking sweet wine and gnawing upon chickpeas:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWho are you among men, and where do you come from?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow old are you, good sir?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>6 <\/b>and \u201cWhat age were you when the Mede arrived?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;
