{"id":158,"date":"2020-11-30T23:19:01","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T04:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/romancoins\/?page_id=158"},"modified":"2021-01-27T18:38:07","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T23:38:07","slug":"valerian-i","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/romancoins\/roman-leaders\/valerian-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Valerian I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Valerian (Licinius Valerianus) was consul under Severus Alexander (222-235 CE) and served as Roman emperor from 253 &#8211; 260 CE after he supported a rebellion against Maximinus in 238 CE. As emperor he established his son Gallienus as co-emperor of the west and rarely set foot in Rome as a result. (This model of co-emperorship was followed by Diocletian, who later established the tetrarchy.) Valerian also persecuted Christians and fought against the Goths and the Persians.
