{"id":79,"date":"2016-06-02T18:22:30","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T18:22:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/rj\/?page_id=79"},"modified":"2016-06-25T17:55:05","modified_gmt":"2016-06-25T17:55:05","slug":"postdoctoral-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/rj\/research\/postdoctoral-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Postdoctoral Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><big>Characterization of the molecular mechanisms that allow the pathogenic bacterium <\/big><i><big>Shigella flexneri<\/big><\/i><big> to sense and survive numerous environments.<\/big><\/p>\n<p>My postdoctoral research was carried out in the laboratory of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.utexas.edu\/paynelab\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Shelley Payne<\/a>\u00a0at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Texas<\/a>. \u00a0As a postdoctoral fellow in the Section of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Texas at Austin, I worked to understand how bacterial pathogens respond to changes in their environment. \u00a0The model system that I used \u00a0was the facultative intracellular bacterium <em>Shigella flexneri<\/em>, which encounters many stressful environments during its journey through the external environment and human host.\u00a0 The conditions in the external environment, including nutrient and ion availability, temperature, moisture, pH, aerobicity, and the presence of other microorganisms, are extremely variable.\u00a0 After ingestion by the human host, <em>Shigella<\/em> must evade the host immune response, survive the acidic stomach, successfully transverse the small intestine to arrive in the colon and infect the colonic epithelial cells, which presents yet another set of distinct environmental conditions.\u00a0 Each of these potentially stressful environments that <em>Shigella <\/em>encounters may induce the expression of a particular set of genes that results in phenotypic changes.\u00a0 Thus, one of the approaches that I used in my research wasidentification and characterization of <em>Shigella<\/em> genes that are induced when <em>Shigella<\/em> encounters stressful environments, specifically those that are induced when <em>Shigella<\/em> is in the colonic epithelial cells.<\/p>\n<p><u>Papers from my post-doctoral research:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Wei J, Goldberg MB, Burland V, Venkatesan MM, Deng W, Fournier G, Mayhew GF, Plunkett G 3rd, Rose DJ, Darling A, Mau B, Perna NT, Payne SM, <b>Runyen-Janecky<\/b>LJ, Zhou S, Schwartz DC, Blattner FR. 2003.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12704152\">Complete genome sequence and comparative genomics of Shigella flexneri serotype 2a strain 2457T.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"jrnl\" title=\"Infection and immunity\">Infect Immun<\/span>.
