Will Kent

Will Kent gave us a behind-the-scenes look at Wikidata’s operations and data collection process. He gives us details on Wikidata and the community that allows users to contribute data, and he also assists those working on projects to progress their work. Will taught me that anybody can be an editor, which is good because individuals may contribute information, but it’s also terrible since the material they add can not be accurate. Will’s visit to our class was very beneficial in helping us learn more about Wikidata and how to locate information when we don’t know it. His visit changed the way I thought about digital humanities; it made me realise that Wikidata is a platform for community interaction rather than just a repository of knowledge. Wikidata is a platform since it connects communities and facilitates their cooperation. Having this data in one location facilitates collaboration and learning, which strengthens our linkages to the digital humanities. Will’s visit to our class opened my eyes to the importance of communication for RHCS and the community. We constantly require access to information in order to comprehend and learn. Having accessibility ands inclusivity that the technology provides. Technology facilitates the connection with a wider range of experts and voices from different background. This helps to lead an enriching discussion. This can be especially important in a rhetoric and communication course where different viewpoints are helpful for debate and critical thinking.
