Cohen Visualization Assignment

The visualization I chose is a bar chart/graph. The graph is comparing the illustrators of comics countries of origin. This type of visualization typically is used for comparing and looking for correlations between mediums. According to the information visualization chapter these charts were used in, “Early accounting systems for tracking inventory and also for taking census information used tabular forms. These allow easy correlation across values. The notion of continuous graphs, line charts, and other visual representations of information from natural or social phenomena did not appear until modern times. These emphasize continuous change,” (page 92). The data is being shown here effectively because it is very clear the visual is very clear and color coded to display the information accurately. It has the countries that have the most illustrators from it at the top of the visualization at the top, moving down to the countries with the least amount of illustrators from there at the bottom. This is very easy for the eye to follow and get the most out of the graphic. One thing I found unusual about the visual is the overwhelming majority of countries listed that have less than 15 illustrators. There probably could have been another way of representing this instead of those places looking so small compared to the top three countries that are actually the outliers in this situation, which the visualization makes it look like they are the norm.
