Wikidata Visualization- Major Assignment #1

Wikidata Visualization

This comics subject is about fictional female characters created by cartoonist. This shows gender representation and discrepancy by cartoonist. The amount of men artists who have created female characters is far more when compared to women artists.  From this chart we can see that out of 63 artists, only 4 were female.

This can be seen significant because often times women are underrepresented in the work force. This is an example of that because here we only see a small fraction of women being represented.

For my Wikidata visualization I choose to analysis a table graph through Wikidata Query search. This graph shows all fictional female characters created by cartoonist. Like I was saying before, this shows us that there are far more men created female characters than women. This is good for us to see and take note of. This graph puts things intro perspective and depicts the uneven representation of male and female cartoonist. Another thing I noticed—I’m not sure if this has any significance—is that almost all of the cartoonists have created a lot of female characters. Therefore, when examining the graph, their names show up frequently and more than once. I choose this table graph because it shows everything very clearly and in an organized way. The other graphs available to look at are very messy are not helpful for understanding the information being shown.

When looking at this graph I initially struggled with understanding the material being shown. Once clearly reading each columns label and putting all the information together it started to clique more.

An interesting point being visualized here, is just the fact that there are so many more male cartoonist creating female characters. I find that interesting, and wonder if there are more female cartoonist creating more female characters that they are not showing.

With more time I wish I would be able to research all of the female characters and the kinds of people the male cartoonist created them to be. Then, I would also look into the backgrounds and other creations these male cartoonist have.

From doing this and the process, I learned that through Wikidata you are able to filter information and condense it by editing it. With this it just helps organize all of the information in a certain section. I think this is very helpful because a lot of it is very broad so filtering it and condensing the information lets us know what we are looking at and analysis it better.
