Steenz Reflection

Upon her visit to the class, Steenz began by discussing her professional journey and how she arrived at her current position.  Steenz has a strong passion for comics and participated in our class discussion about their significance. A point that she made that really stuck to me was that comics can be viewed as a way of connecting with others and expressing yourself, not just something we read for enjoyment. When we look at a comic closely, we can discover that it conveys a more complex message than we may have initially assumed. People can also express themselves in a powerful way when they make their own comics. This has the power to bring people together, spark their imaginations, and give voices that might not otherwise be heard a platform. When I continue to look at and work with comics this semester and in the future I am going to take a deeper dive into the meaning and message of them. I want to open up my creation and imagination to them. It was really cool to have Steenz visit via Zoom. It felt like she was in the classroom because we could still interact with her while understanding everything she was teaching us. Since we wouldn’t have been able to talk to Steenz in class or learn from her without technology, this just serves to highlight the positive effects that technology can have on our lives. Overall, I loved hearing and learning from Steenz on her experience and love for comics.
