Steenz Reflection Martin

Steenz gave a super informative talk about their life and work. They also discussed how they got into comics which was more unconventional than the typical artist. I enjoyed the discussion on how they got into Heart of the City. I found it inspiring that they stuck to how they draw and turned Heart of the City into their own instead of following in the prior creator’s footsteps. However, I was not surprised to hear about the backlash they received from the readers. I found it interesting to learn that at least in Steenz’s case, they do not complete all the steps of the comics process. Steez said someone different does the lettering and the coloring. I imagine this makes the process a lot faster especially since they have to make so many comics. I also found it interesting to hear that they work way in advance which makes it difficult to talk about pop culture or news events. Steenz said they have to make sure it is something that will stay in the media cycle and not be irrelevant by the time the comic comes out. Steenz taught us a lot about the comic process that many of us did not know before. They definitely deepened our understanding of comics. Like I talked about in my Will Kent post, Zoom allows people from all over the world to connect. It also allows us to hear from a community expert like Steez even though they live far away.
