Steenz visit to class was the most fun I had learning with a guest. They were so knowledgeable in the comic-making world. The process of making a comic is so much more than I thought. It was my first time learning that there isn’t always one person involved with the production of a syndicate comic strip. I also did not know that Steenz acquired the “Heart of the City” from a different cartoonist. Steenz makes the comics ahead of time, which makes sense as they have to produce comics very frequently. I was also interested in the fact that they work on many different projects at the same time. Some of the projects include more than working on comics, such as going to conferences and teaching at different kinds of workshops.
The most interesting part I found out in the meeting with Steenz was how pop culture is involved in the comic strip. I forgot that the process of making a comic strip takes time, as it has to go through more than one person at a time. So, Steenz has to think about whether or not the topic is buzzing for long enough to be relevant so that it does not seem out of touch when the comic strip is released. The fact that society runs through topics constantly that having a comic being released a week or longer after an incident becomes a hot topic is insane to me.
I really liked Steenz’s visit and hope to have more cartoonists visit.
