Will Kent is incredibly educated on wikidata and everything it has to offer. He mainly presented on what wikidata is, and how it can help students, researchers, and really anyone to find out information on really any given subject. He explained that wikidata is free and structured, so everyone has access to the site. One takeaway I have from his visit is that every wikipedia page has a link to the wikidata page. I was completely unaware of this, but now when I am on wikipedia, I pay extra attention to this detail. Will gave us helpful information on how to better navigate wikidata which will be directly applicable to our studies this whole semester involving wikidata. Will’s visit reminded me of the power of technology in many ways. One, for him to even be able to talk with the class shows the wide reach technology has. Two, the way he was able to share his insights about wikidata and how to deepen our understanding and abilities in using wikidata gave me an idea of the positive impact the site has overall. It is solely for the purpose of giving out information to those who seek it. Without the site, people would have to do their own research and sometimes that could come out inaccurate or the person could give up altogether in finding the answer. Wikidata is very important in giving accurate and reliable information to its viewers, and proves the overarching importance of digital humanities.
