From what I can remember through my experience of Will Kent’s presentation, he was teaching the class some of the basics of Wikidata. He taught us different ways in which we could use Wikidata to come up with data and visualizations for comics, comic artists, and comic writers. One thing that was very clear from his presentation is that Wikidata has access to a ton of different data for different subjects, and that the data can be used to create different types of visualizations. I think that Will’s visit will mostly impact the work that we produce in the class. He taught us different ways to visualize, collect, and connect data. This is very important in producing quality work in our class because we are always looking for different ways that we can connect different data to our comic artists. It also allows us to understand and interpret the data that we are seeing, as well as the data that may be missing because he also taught us that Wikidata does not have substantial data about everything that we may be searching for. The community engagement in Wikidata is very interesting to me because everyone has a chance to upload data about whatever they may want, and this engagement in the community will allow other people and I to actually visualize other peoples work and thoughts. It was nice to have a professional to zoom into class because he had such a vast understanding of Wikidata when most of us had no idea how to use it, so we were able to learn a lot in a short period of time. This shows that social media isn’t the only form of technological communication, but we can actually sort of meet face to face with somebody even if you are not in the same geographical area. This connects to one of our lectures about what digital humanities actually is. It proved that communication an be achieved successfully through technology, and that technology is an important part of our communication in todays world because we would not have had the chance to meet with Will Kent had it not been for technology.
