Wikidata Visualization – Kylee Lewandowski

Major Assignment 1

The visualization I chose was a color-coded bar chart depicting female cartoon artist, comics artists, and comics writers. It also shows their country of citizenship. On the graph’s x axis, it has a list of countries and up the y axis is people’s names that fall into these categories mentioned earlier. There are colored rectangles above each country that the artist is a citizen of. For example, the Unites States has 11 blocks above it, and if you trace the blocks over the y axis you can see the person it is connected to. Along with showing the country of the person it also show’s their occupation. Each block is color coded based on their occupation. For example, Marty Links has a purple block over the United States. This shows she is a citizen of the United States and is a comics writer. I chose this visualization because it is the easiest to sort all the information and visually understand what is being said. It is significant to see the females who fall under these three categories. I also did a search and changed female to male to compare the results. I noticed there is about triple the number of males falling under the categories of cartoonists, comic artists, and comics writers than there are women.

This is a good visualization if someone is looking for a female related to cartoons from a specific country. With this visualization they can see the country they are looking for and then the color-coded block will show what occupation they do related to comics. This is a good base for finding someone to do furter research on. If I had more time, I would make a map of where they specially are from. The pins on the map will be color coded based on their occupation related to the three categories listed above. I also would add more categories related to jobs surrounding the comic artist field. An interesting point shown on the graph is there are two comics artist who don’t have a country of citizenship. This could be a result of not having enough data on their Wikidata page. They fall under the category of comics writer but not country of citizenship. Something also that could be improved is if people fall under more than one occupation category, they could have multicolored blocks. For example, Marty Links falls under all three categories, but her block is only depicted as a comics writer. If I had more time, I would improve the depictions of the blocks.

From creating this visualization, I learned in order to display specific data on a graph, it makes it easier to go under the Wikidata page of the information you are trying to display and putting in what is specifically says. For example, I was trying to get Marty Links to show in the data and I went to her Wikidata page and saw the category of occupation. Under the occupation category I saw the three subcategories. I put those in the Wikiquery and from there, I adjusted it to show more people. The Wikidata page was similar to a cheat sheet of how to get Marty Links to be displayed in the data ran through the Query. I also learned a simple way to get to a specific Query is to copy information from already built Queries. For example, I wanted to keep the color-coded bar chart but in order to do that, I had to copy a code from an already existing Query and place it into mine. This directly created the bar chart Query every time I ran the code without me having to adjust the filters on the website to show a bar chart.
