The visualization I made was a data table that depicted artists who are non-binary and born in the United States. I chose these specific statements because my cartoonist, Bianca Xunise, fits all these values. Bianca Xunise was one of the people that was a result in the table.
As for what is being effectively represented, the data table showcases the names of people who fit the descriptions of human, non-binary, and born in the U.S. Next, the names and codes that are attached to the people in Wikidata are provided. The options provided on how to put the data into a visualization were limited, as it only provided the table, graph builder, tree, dimensions, and graph. The one that was the most readable was the data table. The table is usually used to list items and their categories from the data provided, but they do not offer much of anything else. In fact, “all of the information in it makes good sense but trying to read columns of [names] to see a pattern in them is difficult” (The Digital Coursebook). The one interesting point that was listed, however, was that they listed all types of artists, not just specifically cartoonists. Some of the results were people who were writers, performance artists, and much more. This was interesting because the list shows that, across all spectrums of art, there are very few non-binary people born in the U.S. actively in Wikidata’s system.
Creating this visualization was very difficult because I wanted to provide more information specifically about my cartoonist, Bianca Xunise, or their work but Wikidata does not have a lot of information posted about them nor their comics/syndicate. I also had a hard time using SPARQL because I realized that I would have to input more codes (instead of one) if I wanted to get very specific information as a result. However, once I understood that I would have to put in more work, inputting the information was easy as I used an example to start the SPARQL and copy-pasted things I needed from Wikidata.
My plans for Critical Creation #1 will be to figure out a way can get more information on Bianca Xunise or their comic strips from Wikidata’s database. If I cannot, there is not much I can do outside of this assignment regarding my cartoonist and their work. The visualization I want to make is a bar chart because I want there to be a relationship between the data points from the results I get. I also like to see more information than just a list of names.
