I chose one of the GNC Visualizations that shows different illustrators’ countries of residence. This visualization has both a graph and a map that I found to be really helpful when looking at to be able to see both displays of this data. These graphs display the different countries where illustrators live. When considering visualizations, “a few fundamentals besides the type of chart and the rhetoric of its impact can be useful in guiding design decisions. The components of visualizations include axes, elements, scales, order/ sequence, values of coordinates, and the graphic variables”(pg. 97). This is very relevant and important when trying to interpret the meaning of different graphics. Depending on how they’re made can tell you a lot, or not very much. The more components a graph has, the easier it is to understand the intention and information that the illustrator tries to convey. The information in this particular visualization is helpful in understanding correlations between where certain illustrators live. From the creation of this visualization, that there are certain countries that have a higher population of illustrators residing there, than others. I think that this visualization is effective at portraying the data that is being shown. There aren’t too many details, so it isn’t too confusing to look at, but it’s also not super elaborate which creates a straightforward look. There is information that’s not shown but nothing that I think would be necessary to show. Which adds to the simplicity of the visualization and makes it easy for the viewer to understand.
