The Breakfast Club- Niditch, Sarna, Speiser

Today in our group we discussed the different interpretations of Genesis 1 by Niditch, Sarna, and Speiser. We also talked about what we each thought was in important point made by each author. We determined that from Niditch, the emphasis on the portrayal of women compared to men and how it still has great relevance today. From Sarna’s reading we addressed the point that because man is made in God’s image, murdering another human being is not orly morally wrong, but also a divine sin. Lastly, we discussed Speiser’s interpretation beginning with the unique set up of his text with the summary and comments. We continued by discussing the hebrew grammatical structure and the first two words of Genesis.
