Allegory and the Senses (oatmeal)

Allegorical readings reject the “literal sense” of a story because they allow for personal interpretations to effect the meaning. In society today, we look for one answer, compared to early Christians who settled with texts that could be interpreted in many ways. “Plain sense” is an interpretation where personal opinions are added to make a text relevant to specific time periods and individual lives. “Literal sense” is taking the text word for word, without the effect of any previous knowledge and personal opinion.
