This story essentially justifies a real flood that had happened (probably of smaller scale). Similar to Genesis, there is a disruption between the connection between the angels and humans except this time the angels are at fault. We talked about the purpose of using “40 days” (typical lifespan at the time) and absurd lengths of life (950 years) repetitively throughout the Bible; the fact that it can represent ones relationship and righteousness with God. Also, similar to Genesis 1-3, there is misogynism in both stories. In Noah, the wives are used for one purpose (to explain creation of population) but their names are not given, however, their male partners names are.
