Lilith

The Alphabet of Ben Sira serves as an etiology that explains things such as gender hierarchy and unexplained deaths of infants. Lilith, the first Eve, is often equated to female sexuality. Lilith sins because of her insubordination to Adam, and therefore to God. She also takes God’s name in vain. Modern interpreters such as Plaskow flip the story and give a very different view of women and particularly Lilith. They view independence of women as something positive rather than demonic.
