Today we started class with a discussion of the gender/sex constructions of ancient society.  Our discussion focused on the fact that masculine traits were seen primarily as good and feminine traits were seen primarily as bad. It is important to note that men and women could portray traits opposite of their gender. In class, we discussed how the comments made by ancient philosophers like Philo aimed to answer questions of society, often in creative ways. We also discussed the differences in how the intellectual realm and the spiritual realm were viewed confluently in ancient times versus how they are viewed separately today.
