Today we discussed the complex arguments for and against the Documentary Hypothesis encapsulated in The Nature of the Pentateuchal Narrative by Collins. We explored how the inconsistencies and variations in the Pentateuchal text can be somewhat explained by the theory involving the J, E, D, and P editors. We considered what it means for the Pentateuch to be interpreted literally and to be interpreted metaphorically. We came to agreement upon the idea that uncovering the origins of the Pentateuch is very speculative and that the evidence only leads to the conclusion that Moses did not author the books of the Pentateuch.
