Qualitative Analysis
- Qualitative analysis is the analysis of qualitative data such as text data from interview transcripts.
- Analytic and integrative skills
- Personal knowledge of data collected
Grounded Theory
- Interpreting recorded data about a phenomenon to build theories about said phenomenon
- Interpretations are grounded in gathered empirical evidence
- Eliminate bias and let data speak for itself
- Open Coding – method of identifying concepts hidden within the data potentially related to the phenomenon
- Concepts then organized in to categories
- Evolve in to constructs within a theory
- Axial Coding – categories are organized in to tentative relationships to explain the phenomena of interest
- Selective Coding – identifying a central category and relating it to other categories
- Theoretical Saturation – when new data does not effect the change in categories or theories
Content Analysis
- Systematic analysis of the content within the text
- Sentiment Analysis – used to capture people’s opinion towards a phenomenon
- There are not a lot of systemic procedures that allow processes to be replicated by other researchers
- Coding process is restricted to the text at hand
Hermeneutic Analysis
- Interpret subjective meaning of texts within socio-historic context
- Truly interpretive for analyzing qualitative data
- Study of the practice of interpretation
Winston,
Thank you for your summary this week. Since we had so many people doing summaries this week, it was interesting to see what was included from the reading in the various summaries and what was left out. It was helpful to see what each summarizer found important and what was included by all. This allowed us to see what was really important, what all of you included across the board. All of you did a good job summarizing the definition of qualitative research/analysis and comparing it to quantitative analysts which was very helpful. Overall, I think you all did a great job pointing out the main points
