With the increasing digitization of society, there has been a proliferation of undesirable behavior in digital exchanges. This research explores the topic of digital ethics and how to assist users to develop ethical digital citizenship. The fundamental problem the authors identify is how to ensure technology and societal digital capabilities are balanced and develop at the same pace. The research utilized the qualitative methods of a case study, a field study and a literacy study. These methods ensured that the research took into account the participant experience via a case study. Expanding to include a field study with extensive interviews over an extended period of time with an organization driving a structured digital citizenship education community to understand how such a program is crafted and launched. Finally, incorporating existing documentation through a literacy study of the digital citizenship education topic to assess how far the field has advanced. Based on this research, in order for digital citizens capabilities to keep pace with technology, a proper digital citizenship education program is required. The program does not need to be a formal format but should include bringing non-digital societal norms onto the digital platforms to discourage unwanted behavior. Additionally, successful programs have positive reinforcement of desired behaviors as well as prominent role models to demonstrate how to use technology as a productive, ethical digital citizen.
