Students harnessed the power of poetry with environmental awareness, both inside and outside the classroom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\">Th<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">e<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> project was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehighline.org\/art\/projects\/insectageddon\/\">Insectageddon<\/a>, a worldwide collective horticulture celebration hosted by the New York High Line and artist Cecilia Vicu\u00f1a. The<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> event <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">engaged the community through <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\">art, education, and activism<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">,<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> honor<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">ing the<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> insects and pollinators who maintain every ecosystem on the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Richmond Public Schools educator Alana Hayes taught sixth grade science at Binford Middle School. Binford is an arts integrated school and Turnaround Arts partner school. <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Hayes had been trained in arts integrated instruction with Partners in the Arts, and developed a unit that explored arts, science, and literary academic standards in her classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-node-type=\"line\">Previously, Hayes had worked with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay RiverWise education program to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/stormwater.allianceforthebay.org\/binford\">stormwater best management practices<\/a> to the school. This unit, students studied the Chesapeake Bay watershed and created poetry based on nature to communicate their findings.<\/p>\n<h3 data-node-type=\"line\"><\/h3>\n<h2 id=\"magicdomid130\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>Hear Me: Communicating through Spoken Word<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1743\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1743\" class=\"wp-image-1743\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/pia\/files\/2022\/09\/Bumbleebee_Laurel_s.png\" alt=\"Man speaking with film festival laurel\" width=\"476\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/pia\/files\/2022\/09\/Bumbleebee_Laurel_s.png 700w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/pia\/files\/2022\/09\/Bumbleebee_Laurel_s-300x182.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burnems has performed &#8220;The Bumblebee&#8221; and his other poems over the years as an instructor at Partners in the Arts educator training courses<\/p><\/div>\n<p id=\"magicdomid2321\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">Roscoe Burnems is Richmond&#8217;s first poet laureate and creator of the Writer&#8217;s Den RVA art collective. He contributed his pollinator-themed spoken word piece, <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium i\"><i>The Bumblebee, <\/i><\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">as a part of the project. Burnems was recorded in front of Binford Middle School in a short film that<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> was screened at the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrikanafilmfestival.org\/afrikana-film-festival\">Afrikana Film Festival<\/a> in Richmond, VA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">Hayes&#8217; sixth grade students viewed his poem and analyzed its message of parenthood and overcoming prejudice. The unit culminated with them <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">writing poems that demonstrated their understanding of watershed ecology and human impacts. Burnems&#8217; poem served as an exemplar of literary choices such as point of view, theme, descriptive language, metaphors, and persuasive writing. The sixth graders practiced revision and analysis by giving and receiving peer feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-node-type=\"line\">Spoken-word is a medium that bridges so many fields in arts and education, from English SOL\u2019s, to critical thinking, developing empathy, summarizing experiences, and healing from traumatic experiences; poetry is a craft that has the capability of addressing a myriad of subjects simultaneously. &#8211; Roscoe Burnems<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-node-type=\"line\"><\/h3>\n<h2 id=\"magicdomid319\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>Here I Am: Context and Community Engagement<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"magicdomid984\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">Experiential education, also known as place-based learning, is an integral part of PK-12 education. By grounding content in students&#8217; local community and everyday surroundings, it becomes personally relevant to them. The project responds to historically-racist infrastructure and seeks to reconnect the city and repurpose urban spaces. It also demonstrates how plants and structures can be used intentionally to help the environment, such as by reducing runoff, encouraging pedestrian and bicycle traffic, and attracting pollinators. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">High Line Art curated and distributed a<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> zine<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">,<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\"> \u201cA Call to Swarm<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">,<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">that included other nature-based <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\">poetry examples.<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> Students reviewed the <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium link-MTY2MzE3MjM0MTQ1NC1odHRwczovL3d3dy5icmlkZ2VwYXJrcnZhLmNvbS90aGUtcGxhbg==\"><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeparkrva.com\/the-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-attrib-id=\"MTY2MzE3MjM0MTQ1NC1odHRwczovL3d3dy5icmlkZ2VwYXJrcnZhLmNvbS90aGUtcGxhbg==\">BridgePark plan<\/a><\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"> in the context of their watershed studies. They also went outside to observe how the RiverWise initiatives around their school, such as a rain garden featuring native plants, affect the greater ecosystem. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"magicdomid319\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 b font-color-000000 font-size-medium\"><b>Engaging Multiple Levels of Expertise<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"magicdomid2405\" class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">A<\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-size-medium\">rt and education go hand in hand. <\/span><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">All students should learn to express themselves through various media. Every academic subject benefits from creative thinking. And students who explore and create through hands-on experiences are interacting with content at a deeper, more meaningful, and more memorable level. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ace-line\" data-node-type=\"line\"><span class=\"author-19192242980\"><span class=\"author-19192242980 font-color-000000 font-size-medium\">This was a powerful lesson for students in how art can be combined with science to support environmental activism beyond the classroom.
