{"id":274,"date":"2013-12-11T12:59:57","date_gmt":"2013-12-11T16:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/?p=274"},"modified":"2013-12-11T12:59:57","modified_gmt":"2013-12-11T16:59:57","slug":"u-of-r-physics-receives-outstanding-sps-chapter-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/2013\/12\/11\/u-of-r-physics-receives-outstanding-sps-chapter-award\/","title":{"rendered":"U of R Physics Receives Outstanding SPS Chapter Award!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the University of Richmond physics department, we\u00a0have long\u00a0believed that in addition to the\u00a0outstanding teaching and opportunities for undergraduate research, one of our major strengths is the sense of community and dedication to each other that our students have as part of the departmental culture.\u00a0 This was recently demonstrated when our department&#8217;s chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) was selected as an &#8220;outstanding&#8221; chapter by the national SPS.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;outstanding&#8221; designation is a notable accomplishment &#8211; less than 10% of the SPS chapters are so honored, an overall average of around one per state.\u00a0 As stated in the award letter<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The selection as an outstanding SPS chapter is based on an assessment of the depth and breadth of SPS activities conducted by your chapter presnted in your report in areas such as physics research, public science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting and representation at physics meetings, providing social interaction for chapter members, and participation in SPS regional and national level programs.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/files\/2013\/12\/SPS-outstanding-chapter-award.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-276\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/files\/2013\/12\/SPS-outstanding-chapter-award-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/files\/2013\/12\/SPS-outstanding-chapter-award-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsnews\/files\/2013\/12\/SPS-outstanding-chapter-award-1024x791.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The award certificate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The research, social, and outreach activities of the chapter were discussed in a report to the national SPS prepared by chapter President Alexis Achey, along with Vice President Molly Luginbohl, Treasurer JP Wheeler, Secretary Kristen Gell, and Historian Liz Bisaha.\u00a0 Among the research\u00a0activities noted\u00a0were five students who received fellowships to travel to\u00a0present their research at the Division of Nuclear Physics fall meeting, and two students who traveled to Paris to work with collaborators over the summer.\u00a0 Social highlights included a stargazing night, liquid nitrogen ice cream party, movie nights, a &#8220;deconstruction night&#8221;
