{"id":934,"date":"2014-09-22T10:21:04","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T15:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/?p=934"},"modified":"2014-09-22T10:21:04","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T15:21:04","slug":"to-dust-we-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2014\/09\/22\/to-dust-we-return\/","title":{"rendered":"To dust we return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In case you haven&#8217;t heard, the people behind the <em>Planck<\/em>\u00a0satellite have released their analysis of the region of the sky observed by BICEP earlier this year. They find higher levels of dust than those found in BICEP&#8217;s foreground models. In fact, the amount of dust is large enough to completely explain BICEP&#8217;s detection.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t rule out the possibility that there is some cosmological signal in the BICEP data, but it does mean there&#8217;s no strong evidence for such a signal.<\/p>\n<p>I should disclose that I haven&#8217;t read the <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1409.5738.pdf\">Planck paper<\/a> yet; I&#8217;ve just skimmed the key sections. But at a quick glance the analysis they&#8217;ve done certainly looks sensible, and for a variety of reasons I&#8217;d be surprised if they got this wrong. Of course, I already thought there was significant reason to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2014\/05\/17\/dust-or-not\/\">doubt<\/a> the original interpretation of the BICEP results.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have much more to say, so here are some links: <a href=\"http:\/\/telescoper.wordpress.com\/2014\/09\/22\/bicep2-bites-the-dust-or-does-it\/\">Peter Coles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preposterousuniverse.com\/blog\/2014\/09\/21\/planck-speaks-bad-news-for-primordial-gravitational-waves\/\">Sean Carroll<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-29305985\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I will make one quick meta observation. Some people are once again castigating the BICEP team for going public with this result prematurely. I think that that criticism is largely misguided. They may well be subject to fair criticism for getting the analysis wrong, of course, but that&#8217;s different from saying that they shouldn&#8217;t have made it public.
