{"id":71,"date":"2008-09-15T09:31:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-15T14:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2008\/09\/15\/teach-the-controversy\/"},"modified":"2008-09-15T09:31:00","modified_gmt":"2008-09-15T14:31:00","slug":"teach-the-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2008\/09\/15\/teach-the-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Teach the controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2008\/09\/10\/black-holes-in-slate\/#comment-103\">Matt Trawick&#8217;s comments <\/a>on my earlier post on Gregg Easterbrook and &#8220;teaching the controversy&#8221; are exactly right.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll just add that the seeming reasonableness of the &#8220;teach the controversy&#8221; position are precisely what makes it so pernicious.<\/p>\n<p>Some people address this with <a href=\"http:\/\/controversy.wearscience.com\/\">humor<\/a>.\u00a0 I sometimes find this approach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.venganza.org\/about\/open-letter\/\">very funny<\/a>, but of course it&#8217;s of no value at all for actually convincing people who aren&#8217;t already convinced.<\/p>\n<p>If you want actual evidence, there&#8217;s this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csicop.org\/intelligentdesignwatch\/teach-controversy.html\">survey<\/a> of biology department heads, which found that essentially none thought that there was a controvery.\u00a0 I found this at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natcenscied.org\/\">National Center for Science Education<\/a>,\u00a0 which has a lot of resources promoting the teaching of evolution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matt Trawick&#8217;s comments on my earlier post on Gregg Easterbrook and &#8220;teaching the controversy&#8221; are exactly right.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll just add that the seeming reasonableness of the &#8220;teach the controversy&#8221; position are precisely what makes it so pernicious.
