{"id":519,"date":"2012-08-19T11:24:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T16:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/?p=519"},"modified":"2012-08-19T11:24:36","modified_gmt":"2012-08-19T16:24:36","slug":"kuhn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2012\/08\/19\/kuhn\/","title":{"rendered":"Kuhn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Coles has a <a href=\"http:\/\/telescoper.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/19\/kuhn-the-irrationalist\/\">nice post<\/a> on Thomas Kuhn&#8217;s place in the philosophy of science. Many people seem to regard Kuhn&#8217;s book <em>The Structure of Scientific Revolutions<\/em> as, well, revolutionary in its effect on how we think about the nature of scientific progress and its relation to objective truth.<\/p>\n<p>I confess that I never really got the point of Structure of Scientific Revolutions, so I&#8217;m glad to see that Peter&#8217;s on the same page. He goes further than I&#8217;d ever thought of going, placing Kuhn on a continuum leading from Hume and Popper through to the clownish yet pernicious writings of Feyerabend. I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d go so far as to hang Feyerabend around Kuhn&#8217;s neck, but maybe Peter&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, in addition to putting down Kuhn et al.&#8217;s vision of what science is, Peter advances his own view, which is 100% right, in my opinion. I tried to say <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2009\/01\/22\/why-i-am-not-a-popperian\/\">much the same thing<\/a> in my own way a few years ago, but Peter&#8217;s version is probably better.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Coles has a nice post on Thomas Kuhn&#8217;s place in the philosophy of science.
