{"id":192,"date":"2009-12-18T03:04:26","date_gmt":"2009-12-18T08:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2009\/12\/18\/dark-matter-not-yet-detected\/"},"modified":"2009-12-18T03:04:26","modified_gmt":"2009-12-18T08:04:26","slug":"dark-matter-not-yet-detected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.richmond.edu\/physicsbunn\/2009\/12\/18\/dark-matter-not-yet-detected\/","title":{"rendered":"Dark matter not (yet) detected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having written about the speculation, I suppose I should finish the story.\u00a0 In a few talks yesterday, the CDMS dark matter detection experiment announced its latest results.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t hear the talks (at least one was streamed on the web, but I was in bed by then.)<\/p>\n<p>They saw two events in their detector which look like what you&#8217;d expect from dark matter particle interactions, but two isn&#8217;t enough to conclude anything.\u00a0 The group has elaborate procedures for calculating how many background events (i.e., events that look like dark matter but aren&#8217;t) might be seen.\u00a0 Two is more than the expected number, but not by all that much: they estimate there&#8217;s a 23% chance of getting two background events.\u00a0 To say they&#8217;d seen dark matter, that probability would&#8217;ve needed to be a tiny number.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s <em>possible<\/em> that these were dark matter events.\u00a0 If so, I guess it means that the experiment is right at the edge of having sufficient sensitivity to detect dark matter particles.\u00a0 This&#8217;d be great, because then future experiments would presumably be able to provide a real detection.<\/p>\n<p>The group said they were planning to post a paper on the arXiv, but it&#8217;s not up yet.\u00a0 Maybe they meant they&#8217;d submit it yesterday, and it&#8217;d appear today, or maybe they just didn&#8217;t get everything finished when they said they would.\u00a0 I imagine it&#8217;ll be up soon.\u00a0 In the mean time, there&#8217;s a brief <a href=\"http:\/\/cdms.berkeley.edu\/results_summary.pdf\">summary<\/a> of the result on their web site.\u00a0 For those who want a bit more detail and can&#8217;t wait for the paper, JoAnne Hewett from Cosmic Variance was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2009\/12\/17\/dark-matter-detected-or-not-live-blogging-the-seminar\/\">liveblogging<\/a> one of the talks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having written about the speculation, I suppose I should finish the story.\u00a0 In a few talks yesterday, the CDMS dark matter detection experiment announced its latest results.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t hear the talks (at least one was streamed on the web, but I was in bed by then.)
